PARCHMENT - [noun] a writing material made from the skin of a goat or a sheep, used mainly in ancient times

Many manuscripts from the Antiquity survived, because they were written down on parchment of a good quality.

Parchment is called "parchment" after the ancient city of Pergamum, where it was invented ca. 200 BC.
